If you own a home, then chances are you know about mildew and mold. After all, nothing is worse than opening a window or checking a closet in the basement only to find it hiding in the shadows.

How do you know which is which, though? They are so similar, but mildew and mold do have some differences. Keep reading below as we dive into mildew and mold in more depth!

What is Mildew?

First things first, what is mildew? Mildew is a fungus that grows on the surface of a wet area. This can be window sills, walls, doors, etc. It is often gray or white in color and its usually harmless. Mildew can be easily wiped away with a cleaner and scrubbing brush.

What is Mold?

Mold, on the other hand, is usually a sign of a bigger issue in a home. This fungus appears in areas where there is repeated exposure to moisture, water seepage, or bacteria. These areas include wet basements, leaking pipes, or even on spoiled food. It is often green, blue, or black in color and appears “fuzzy.”

Their similarities

Mildew and mold are similar in many ways. They are caused by some level of moisture or water seepage. Their appearance is often similar, except for the coloring. They also cause health issues if left untreated for long periods of time. Some health issues that mildew and mold can cause include:

  • Allergic reactions such as sneezing, runny noses, red eyes or skin rashes
  • Asthma attacks
  • Irritated eyes, nose, skin, or throat

Their differences

There are many differences between mildew and mold too. The biggest difference is in their severity. Mildew is often considered more of a nuisance than a major issue. It can be cleaned quickly and oftentimes does not return if the area is treated properly. On the other hand, mold is a cause for concern and can lead to major health issues. It can hide virtually anywhere and can cause irreversible damage to structures and personal belongings.
